DETROIT – Latonya Garth has been recognized as this year’s fourth Women’s History Month honoree in the Ilitch Sports + Entertainment Game Changers series. This initiative, in partnership with Comerica Bank, the Detroit Red Wings, and Detroit Tigers, celebrates individuals who significantly impact the Detroit community.

Garth, who began mentoring during her time at Michigan State University, has a long-standing history of being sought after for guidance. “Even when I was in middle and high school, girls would come up to me asking if I would mentor them, and I’d think, I’m trying to mentor myself,” Garth shared. “But I would listen, offer advice, and just be there.”

In 2010, Garth founded the organization IMAGINE Mentoring to support young girls in challenging situations by providing them with tools to channel negativity positively. This initiative was inspired by her experience working at a local school. “I would see these girls walking down the hall, and I thought, these are some smart girls, but they need some training—some life development, some skill training, some character development,” Garth explained. This led her to form a girls’ group, which has grown with the help of friends and community members.

Initially, Garth hoped to reach one school per day, but the program has expanded significantly. “Now we’re in 12 schools across Macomb, Wayne, and Monroe counties, with a team of 15 people and one community center,” she stated.

Garth emphasized the importance of IMAGINE Mentoring, especially during the COVID pandemic. “So many kids were struggling at home. Once the kids returned to school, they had trouble with social skills,” Garth said. The organization addressed these challenges by conducting workshops focused on body language, eye contact, and confidence.

For Garth, staying connected with the girls extends beyond educational support. “I’m always staying aware of current trends, what girls are talking about, and what’s happening on social media,” she noted, highlighting the importance of cultural relevance in her mentoring approach.

Ilitch Sports + Entertainment acknowledges Garth’s impact, with Garth expressing appreciation for the honor. “The recognition from Comerica, the Red Wings, and the Game Changers program is powerful because it raises awareness for what IMAGINE is doing,” Garth said. “You never know who’s in the crowd—someone out there may need this program.”
