The Detroit Regional Chamber has raised concerns about the ongoing budget impasse between the Michigan House and Senate, warning that a failure to reach an agreement by the September 30 deadline could lead to a state government shutdown. With only 46 days left before the deadline, uncertainty remains high for businesses and public services across Michigan.
This week, the Chamber joined with the Small Business Association of Michigan, the Michigan Manufacturers Association, and TalentFirst in sending a letter to legislative leaders. The letter calls for passage of an education budget focused on results. According to these organizations, talent development is critical for economic growth in Michigan.
“There is no longer such a thing as a prosperous state that is not also a highly educated one. Yet, Michigan continues to fall behind, ranking 39th in per capita income and near the bottom in key K-12 metrics, despite being 18th in per-pupil spending. The budget impasse jeopardizes necessary strategic investments to address this,” the letter states.
School districts are reportedly beginning to make cuts to programs related to mental health support, school safety, and career and technical education due to the uncertainty caused by the stalemate.
“The current standoff in Lansing with legislative leadership is unproductive. The Chamber cannot help but worry that the clock is ticking down,” said Chamber representatives.
The Chamber also emphasized that a government shutdown would negatively affect state employees and organizations dependent on state funding. “The Chamber believes a failure to pass a responsible budget hurts business and economic growth. We urge lawmakers to end the delays, come to the table, and pass a final budget that prioritizes long-term investments in our state’s talent pipeline to ensure our future prosperity and global competitiveness,” said Chamber officials.
