The Detroit Regional Chamber’s Political Action Committee (PAC) and a nonprofit group are backing mayoral candidate Fred Durhal III in the upcoming primary race scheduled for August 5. The Chamber PAC has described Durhal as “the most consistent supporter of a pro-growth and pro-economic development agenda,” positioning him as a potential successor to Mayor Mike Duggan.
Durhal, who is currently trailing in polls, is expected to benefit from financial contributions following this endorsement. “This is a strong organization built from many members of the business community who have played a vital role in Detroit’s resurgence,” Durhal stated. He emphasized his vision for Detroit, focusing on job creation, stronger neighborhoods, and safer communities.
Historically, the PAC has supported Duggan with $70,501 in contributions and an additional $20,000 to political groups aligned with his campaigns. It remains uncertain how this endorsement will impact Durhal’s fundraising efforts as the primary approaches.
The Coalition for Detroit’s Growth, another supporter of Durhal, has allocated $52,300 for television ads promoting him. They have also funded billboards highlighting his commitment to Detroit.
During a recent debate hosted by the Detroit Regional Chamber, Durhal presented himself as a reliable candidate ready to succeed Duggan. He discussed plans to eliminate the city’s operating millage by taxing speculators and addressing blight violations. His campaign focuses on reducing bureaucratic hurdles for small businesses and leveraging his government experience.
Durhal aims to expand the Downtown Development Authority’s boundary to boost housing and business projects through tax revenue redirection. He also proposes commercial corridor overlays to attract investment across council districts.
The Chamber PAC previously donated to some of Durhal’s opponents but now backs him after he secured endorsement from two-thirds of its members. Other candidates continue their campaigns with endorsements from various organizations. Council President Mary Sheffield has received labor endorsements while Rev. Solomon Kinloch Jr.’s campaign highlights support from AFSCME 925.
