The Detroit Regional Chamber has congratulated Mary Sheffield and Solomon Kinloch for advancing in the Aug. 5 primary election for Mayor of Detroit. Both candidates will compete in the general election scheduled for November.
In a statement, the Chamber recognized all individuals who participated in the primary process. “We commend them on their campaigns and wish them the best of luck as they advance to the general election this November.”
The Chamber also acknowledged those who ran but did not advance, stating: “Their willingness to step forward and engage in the democratic process is essential for our community’s vitality and is often a thankless service. The Chamber appreciates their dedication and the diverse perspectives they brought to the important conversations around Detroit’s future.”
Emphasizing its role as a representative of local businesses, the Chamber noted: “As the voice of the business community, the Chamber understands that strong, effective leadership in the mayor’s office is critical to continuing Detroit’s economic momentum. The Chamber looks forward to a robust and substantive general election campaign. This election provides a vital opportunity for both candidates to articulate their detailed vision for fostering a competitive business environment, attracting and retaining top talent, ensuring public safety, and strengthening Detroit’s neighborhoods.”
The results from other city races were also confirmed following Tuesday’s primary. In addition to selecting mayoral candidates, voters determined which City Council candidates will appear on November’s ballot.
For at-large council seats, four candidates advanced: Janeé Ayers (former at-large Council Member), James Harris (former Community Relations Chief at Detroit Fire Department), Mary Waters (incumbent Council Member focused on housing), and Coleman Young II (incumbent Council Member and former state lawmaker).
District-level races produced these outcomes:
– District 1: Incumbent James Tate runs unopposed.
– District 2: Roy McCalister Jr., former council member and retired detective/U.S. Army veteran; Angela Whitfield-Calloway, incumbent council member.
– District 3: Cranstana Anderson, community advocate; Scott Benson, incumbent.
– District 4: Latisha Johnson, incumbent running unopposed.
– District 5: Willie Burton (Board of Police Commissioners member) faces Renata Miller (UAW retiree).
– District 6: Tyrone Carter (state representative) against Gabriela Santiago-Romero (incumbent).
– District 7: Denzel McCampbell (public policy professional/congressional aide) faces Karen Whitsett (state representative).
The general election will determine who holds these key positions as Detroit continues efforts toward economic growth and neighborhood development.
