Detroit Public Schools Community District held a Community Board Meeting on March 18 at Davis Aerospace Technical High School. The event brought together families, students, and community partners for an evening focused on education and community engagement.

The meeting aimed to connect the school district with the broader Detroit community by providing updates, resources, and opportunities for families to get involved in their children’s education.

Davis Aerospace students led guided tours of the school for attendees, showcasing features such as a flight simulator and a school boutique. Presentations were given by several departments including Application and Examination Schools, Exceptional Student Education, Transportation, Operations, and Facilities. Attendees received updates on plans for a new Davis Aerospace building. Families also had the chance to speak with staff from the Office of Family and Community Engagement and Enrollment.

A meal was prepared by Davis Aerospace’s chef in partnership with the Office of School Nutrition. The meeting was hosted by Board Secretary Monique Bryant along with Board Members Rev. Dr. Steve Bland Jr. and Bessie Harris. Bryant said these meetings are important opportunities for families to access resources and stay informed about district activities. Harris called Davis Aerospace “the jewel of the east side” while encouraging ongoing engagement between schools and communities. Bland urged students in attendance to “soar” toward their future goals.

Board President LaTrice McClendon attended to support families during the event. Detroit City Council Member Latisha Johnson also joined the meeting to discuss ways city government can help schools address neighborhood issues like blight and improve services such as transportation.

The evening ended with guests receiving goodie bags and an invitation to attend the next Board of Education meeting scheduled for April 14. These meetings are part of DPSCD’s effort to strengthen connections among schools, families, and neighborhoods throughout Detroit.
