The City of Detroit has announced the second round of its Legacy Business Project, which provides grants to support businesses that have been operating in the city for more than 30 years. The program aims to help these longstanding neighborhood businesses by offering financial and technical assistance.
In this new round, a total of 30 grants will be awarded, amounting to $310,000. According to city officials, the microgrant program is designed to make it easier for smaller legacy businesses to access funding for needs such as equipment upgrades, technology improvements, or beautification projects.
The first phase of the project began in March, with 16 shops receiving funding intended for business expansion and improvement. Eligible applicants include various types of for-profit businesses—such as sole proprietorships, partnerships, corporations, and limited liability companies—as well as faith-based organizations involved in licensed commercial activities and independently owned members of retailers’ cooperatives. Nonprofit enterprises that have been selling products or services for at least three decades are also eligible.
