The Detroit Institute of Arts announced on April 14 that it will present the 89th Annual Detroit Public Schools Community District Student Art Exhibition from April 17 to May 24. The event will be held at the museum’s first floor in the Wayne and Joan Webber Education Wing, with an online component also available.
This exhibition marks the longest-standing continuous collaboration between the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) and an educational organization. It provides a platform for students in grades K–12 from across Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD) to showcase their work, including paintings, prints, drawings, photography, ceramics, jewelry, and more.
Salvador Salort-Pons, Director of the DIA, said: “The DIA is proud to provide a platform for Detroit’s young artists to showcase their incredible creativity with this annual exhibition. For 89 years, our partnership with DPSCD has helped us reinforce our commitment to fostering arts education within our community, all while inspiring a new generation of artists.”
Dr. Nikolai Vitti, Superintendent of DPSCD said: “It’s almost unimaginable to think about a student exhibit and partnership lasting 89 years between a public school district and a world-class museum such as the DIA! I am deeply thankful to our teachers for their guidance and commitment to our student artists, and our families for supporting their children. I continue to be proud of our District as we continue to support, protect, and enhance arts education. I encourage everyone to go see the exhibition to not only support our students but to once again be reminded of their infinite talent and how we as a greater community ensure we are doing everything to provide them with the adequate resources to support their growth and development.”
A total of 243 artworks were selected by a jury composed of DPSCD art educators from among students at 39 schools throughout the district.
General admission is free for residents of Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties. More information about the exhibition can be found at dia.org/DPSCD89.
