Detroit City Football Club faced a challenging match against Charleston Battery, resulting in a 3-1 defeat at home. The game began promisingly for Detroit City as Jay Chapman scored an early goal in the second minute with a header from Ben Morris’s corner kick. This marked Chapman’s first goal for Detroit City since his previous goal with Hartford Athletic in early 2024.

However, the lead was short-lived as Cal Jennings, USL Championship’s top scorer, equalized for Charleston just three minutes later. Dominic Gasso had an opportunity to regain the lead for Detroit but missed narrowly. Gasso also received the match’s first yellow card in the 32nd minute.

Jennings further impacted the game by scoring again before halftime, giving Charleston a 2-1 advantage. In the second half, Juan Torres extended Charleston’s lead to 3-1.

Despite several attempts by Detroit City to close the gap, including efforts from Ben Morris and Darren Smith, they could not convert their chances into goals. Substitutions were made throughout the match with Stephen Carroll, Connor Rutz, Haruki Yamazaki, Ates Diouf, and Marcello Polisi entering at various points.

This loss marks Detroit City’s first home defeat of the season at Keyworth Stadium. They previously held a record of three wins and two draws. The team will now head on a series of away games before returning to Keyworth Stadium on June 21st to face The Miami FC.

Tickets for upcoming matches are available through their official website.
