Alex Lyon, a goaltender for the Detroit Red Wings, has expressed gratitude for his time in the NHL while reflecting on his last two seasons with the team. The 32-year-old shared his thoughts during an end-of-season media session on April 19.
“I think now more than ever, I feel like you just can’t take for granted being in the NHL,” Lyon said. “It’s difficult to get there and it’s more difficult to stay.”
Lyon played in 30 games during the 2024-25 season, achieving a record of 14-9-1 with a goals-against average of 2.81, a .896 save percentage, and one shutout. This followed a previous season where he set career highs with 44 games played and 43 starts.
Prior to joining the Red Wings before the 2023-24 season on a two-year contract, Lyon had appeared in only 39 NHL games over six seasons. Despite recent achievements, he remains motivated to improve further.
“I don’t feel satisfied at all,” Lyon stated. “I still feel very hungry… That’s a big motivation for me.”
Reflecting on Detroit’s efforts over the past two seasons, including pushing for a Stanley Cup Playoffs spot, Lyon highlighted valuable growth experiences gained by the team.
“I think us as players didn’t do a good enough job maybe early in the season,” he remarked about their performance. He noted that teams often face challenges late in the season and must prepare accordingly.
With unrestricted free agency approaching this summer, Lyon is uncertain about his future but acknowledged his appreciation for playing in Detroit.
“Still kind of just wrapping things up here,” he said regarding future plans. “A lot of things that are kind of out of my control.”
